The best free editing software for short-form gaming content
DaVinci Resolve offers professional control without watermarks, while CapCut prioritizes speed and simplicity.

If you're making gaming content for posting clips, highlights, or short-form videos for jestr.gg, but don't want to splurge on expensive software, you want an editing tool that has enough features and optimizations to create the videos you want. Below are some of the best options, plus what to watch out for.
1. Davinci Resolve
Although it features a paid version (one-time payment of ~$350 USD), Resolve's free version is suprisingly powerful. It includes full video editing, color grading, audio post-production, and more. Additionaly, you don't have to worry about any random watermarks being added to your exported videos!
There are some potential drawbacks, however, such as the steep learning curve. For beginner editors it may be difficult learning the interface and workflows for a studio grade software. Additionally, the free version does not include auto-captions, requiring a heavily manual process to add captions (we'll mention a workaround later in the guide).
Best for: Creators who want high quality/control over their edits, and willing to learn a tricky interface.
2. CapCut
CapCut's free version offers very accessible editing: trimming, cutting, overlay/text, effects, and more. The editing software is not as strong as Davinci Resolve, but it wins over in terms of simplicity and performance (less lag). CapCut has a beginner friendly interface, however, many features are locked behind the paid version (~$20 USD / monthly).
Auto captions, advanced effects, and AI features are locked behind the paywall of the pro version. CapCut also places a watermark on exported videos, which may hinder the viewing quality of your videos.
Best for: Content creators who want something simple, quick, and efficient, and also don't mind many features being locked behind a paywall.
The easiest way to do auto-captions for free:
Davinci and CapCut do not have auto-caption capabilities for their free versions. We suggest cutting and stitching your videos together using any of the free software listed above. Instead of manually adding captions, export your video, and upload it to Youtube or TikTok using your mobile device. Once you're in the upload process, there will be in-built options to add auto-captions, edit them however you like, and you're good to go!
Choosing the right free editing software really comes down to control vs. convenience. If you want speed, simple timelines, and quick editing processes, CapCut can get the job done for most creators. Davinci Resolve takes more time to learn, but it gives you professional-grade tools, and full control over the quality of your edits. If you do decide to pay for software, the options start to open up.
